Smartness in waste management

A system for monitoring separate collection.

On 2 December, “Smartness in waste management”, Italy's first green environmental open data, was presented in Rome. It is a system for monitoring separate collection in 26 provinces throughout Italy. It was designed to meet local entities’ need to improve the parameters for collection, emissions and the cost of urban waste collection systems, it aims to reduce and prevent waste production in the territory, raising the “smartness” level in the cities by using more complete information tools than those currently available. The control of the waste cycle will enable a real time assessment of the environmental and economic performance.

To implement this process, a memorandum of understanding has been signed by the Ministry for the Environment and Land and Sea Protection and Ancitel Energia e Ambiente, an Italian company that was established in 2007 to develop environmental projects and services for the Italian municipalities. SWM makes important information available such as the waste produced per person, the percentage of separate collection, CO2 emissions produced, the balance of emissions and the average distance of recycling plants and the total cost of the process in euros/inhabitant. The data collected can be shared through the social networks and monitored by means of an app available to all citizens. The 26 municipalities included in the project, which therefore aims to create a better “circular economy” in terms of social, economic and environmental sustainability are Alessandria, Aosta, Ascoli Piceno, Chieti, Cosenza, Crotone, Campobasso, La Spezia, Lecce, Lecco, Matera, Messina, Parma, Pavia, Perugia, Pescara, Pistoia, Prato, Ragusa, Sassari, Taranto, Teramo, Terni, Trapani, Trieste and Vicenza. In the next two years, all the provinces of Italy shall be equipped with this control system.

The development of this environmental open data comes as part of the major European project to achieve the threshold of 50% of recycled waste by 2020, using waste as a proper resource.
